Expedition AI
Technical Requirements
Updated Nov 5, 2024
Hey there!
Just a quick heads-up: We work with schools that want students using real industry-standard AI tools—not restricted, education-only versions. Expedition AI is designed to make that experience easy and fun!
Here’s how it works:
We’ve made Expedition AI as flexible as possible to fit your district’s needs. You can pick and choose (“plug and play”) missions, so students don’t have to go through every single one. But, you’ll need to select real AI tools that your students are allowed to access. Here are the basic setup requirements:
System Requirements
Devices: Students will need laptops, Chromebooks, or iPads (with keyboards) to participate fully in Expedition AI.
Internet Access: Reliable internet is essential for accessing AI platforms and tools.
Note on Licensing
Lite Package: Schools opting for the Lite version will need to whitelist AI tools.
Plus Package: Schools using the Plus package will receive access to our Secure Access Portal. While students will still be required to log into each tool using their school email addresses, the Secure Access Portal allows these tools to bypass school-wide or district-wide whitelisting. This setup enables more streamlined access for individual classes using Expedition AI, without impacting network permissions across the broader school or district infrastructure.
Age Requirement: All AI tools and platforms selected are compliant for use with students aged 13+.
AI Tools & Platform Requirements
Expedition AI requires students to use generative AI tools and other web-based resources. Most of these resources are free, but we do require that students have access to a paid AI image generator so they don’t run into limitations.
Generative Image Tool Options (Paid)
Choose one of the below:
Adobe Firefly
Midjourney
DALL-E
If students already have access to Adobe Express or the Creative Cloud, they can utilize Adobe Firefly without additional licensing.
Generative AI Platform (FREE):
Choose one of the below generative AI tools for your students to use. (Students ONLY need access to the free version)
ChatGPT
Perplexity
Claude
Gemini
Expedition AI is built to operate on any of these platforms, giving you the freedom to choose which tool best fits your infrastructure and policies. If you’d like your students to use multiple, that is also welcome!
Web-Based Tools (FREE Access)
Students will need access to the following free web-based tools to complete all Expedition Ai missions*. You are also welcome to use the alternative suggestions.
d’Skills Rebel Base (where the missions are accessed). URL: https://community.dskills.io/sign_in; https://community.dskills.io)
Suno
Canva (alternative: Google Slides)
Zazzle
RouteNote (Alternative is Audio.com. This tool is optional. Used for students to publish music to Spotify with parental consent.)
Vizly (alternative: Google /Code for similar functionality)
*All tools are permissible to students 13+.
Mission Flexibility
Expedition AI’s missions are designed to be mixed and matched. For example, if your school doesn’t approve a specific tool—say, Suno for music—you can skip that mission without affecting other activities. We keep updating our mission library, so teachers always have fresh options to mix and match.
